News: Coloring Dragon Cross ongoing

I'm very happy to have been offered the position of colorist for Big City Comics' ongoing series, "Dragon Cross". I come aboard with issue #2, hitting your LCS in December. Make sure to pick it up, and put Dragon Cross on your Pull List!! #3 is currently solicited in the new Previews, but your LCS should be able to order #2 (and maybe #1) for you as well!

I will post updates (as allowed) as often as possible.

Things I'm tired of hearing/seeing

A curmudgeonly rant.

Now that so many movies based on comic books have been well-received in Hollywood and only seem to be on the upswing, the phrase "Graphic Novel" or the derivative "Graphic Novelist" is more ubiquitous than crabs at a Pam Anderson Beach Party.

They dare not call comic books comic books, because apparently it's more palatable for non-comic readers to be seen in public watching or buying a movie based on a graphic novel. It sounds more erudite, doesn't it? Well, yes, semantically I suppose it does, but let's call a spade a spade and stop perpetuating negative stereotypes that already make the niche market of comic book collecting an endangered one.

Graphic novels are distinctive from comic books in a variety of ways, which is why the two terms have generally never been used interchangeably until the saturation of comic book properties in the movie industry. Granted, there are exceptions to the rule, but by and large, most comic related movies are based on ongoing series or limited series as opposed to graphic novels, which are generally defined by length, binding and whether the story is self-contained, among other variables. But all comics suddenly fall under the Graphic Novel Umbrella to appeal to a wider base and sell more tickets!

Note that the 30 Days of Night poster above claims it's based on "the graphic novel". Apparently, in this case, "the graphic novel" means a series of single issues printed on a monthly schedule presenting a serialized arc.

Humorous grafitti

Saw these at List Universe and they made me laugh. There is more at the link, but these are the ones worth seeing (in my opinion).

If You Like...The Weakerthans

I'm a big music nut, as anyone who knows me can tell you. So I figured I'd make some posts about it and maybe introduce new bands to you. So what I'm gonna do is list some more well-known bands, and make suggestions of other, lesser-known bands/artists that you might like.

Soo, without further ado...

If you like...
The Weakerthans
Then you should check out...
Tokyo Police Club

Why?
I actually had to do some research when I first heard Tokyo Police club some months ago (thanks to the awesome KEXP Song of the Day Podcast) to make sure this wasn't Weakerthans singer John K. Samson's new band. TPC's singer, Dave Monks shares not only an uncanny similarity to Samson's singing voice, but also in his songwriting style. Lyrically clever, evocative and instantly familiar, TPC should appeal to you if you like the Weakerthans.

Check this track out: Citizens of Tomorrow (see video below).

Good Band Name 2

While at work this morning, I came across a term that was kind of peculiar (at least to laymen like myself). It's a medical term, and I'm sure it holds no humor whatsoever to someone who suffers from it, but nevertheless, in my infinite maturity, I scribbled it down on a post-it note, thinking it would be a good band name...

Pulmonary Noodle!

For some reason, this image popped up on Google when I performed a search for Pulmonary Noodle....

Rockatoo

Again, I am easily amused, but this just floats my boat for some reason.

It's late. I'm tired. This amused me far more than it should've...

Good Band Name 1

Have you or a friend ever spoken an odd string of words to which the only logical reply is "Dude, that'd be a good band name!" ? No? Oh...well, play along with me anyway, huh?? And just for good measure, I will Google the name and post the most interesting image that correlates with the phrase.

As I was cooking dinner tonight, it came to me...Shrimp Juice!
For reasons unclear to me, this image popped up among the Google search results...

Stay tuned for more Good Band Names.
